About Polylactic Acid (PLA) Fiber

Wuxi Runda Dye-Finishing Equipment Factory

1. What is PLA fiber: PLA fiber is made from starch-containing agricultural products such as corn, wheat and beet. Lactic acid is produced by fermentation, then polycondensation and melt spinning give the fiber. PLA fiber is a synthetic fiber whose raw material can be planted easily and whose waste degrades naturally in the environment. In soil or seawater, microorganisms decompose it into carbon dioxide and water; it releases no toxic gas when burned and causes no pollution, making it a sustainable ecological fiber. Fabrics of PLA have good hand feel and drape, resist UV light, have low flammability and excellent processing performance, and suit fashion, casual wear, sportswear and sanitary products - a broad application prospect.

2. Properties of PLA fiber:

2.1 Biodegradability: PLA fiber degrades completely in nature into CO2 and H2O, which become the starch raw material for lactic acid again through photosynthesis. Buried with other organic waste, PLA fiber decomposes within months.

2.2 Other properties: PLA fiber has a comfortable hand feel, good moisture transmission, low density, good drape and shape retention. It can be blended with cotton, wool and other fibers to improve the performance of the finished fabric.

3. Dyeing and finishing notes: PLA fiber is sensitive to alkali and high temperature. Use mild alkali or weak acid processes, keep the dyeing temperature moderate (around 100-110 degC for disperse dyes), control the tension, and avoid over-drying. Proper process control gives good levelness and fastness.
